If you follow me on instagram, you might have noticed that I’m suddenly surrounded with shades of green, blue, and sand. That’s because I’ve been down in Mexico escaping the Chicago winter for a few days. It seems like a lot of people I know from the Northeast and the Midwest are doing the same thing – jetting to sunnier skies for a vacation recharge.
The beauty products I take with me on a warm weather vacation are intentionally pared back. They’re geared at highlighting natural, clean, sun-kissed skin (the sun is really your best beauty product and requires no suitcase space!) and re-hydrating skin and hair. I’m after a hydrated-and-bronzed glow.
After a day on the beach or by the pool, here’s what I use when dusk falls and it’s time to get ready for an evening out:
Nourishing Hair Oil
First and foremost, I use Oribe Gold Lust Hair Oil because it smells supermodel sexy, but secondly because it does a lot of good for hair. I mix up a dollop in my palms and apply it throughout strands. I use it most regularly on dry hair as a finishing oil to control frizz, define curls, add shine and soften ends. You can also apply it throughout damp hair to hydrate and repair damaged hair and split ends. Plus it gives hair UV protection so this one is great for daytime too.
Dewy Lip Balm
Jessica Alba’s Honest Company Organic Lip Balm is my favorite lip balm of the moment. The Sweet Orange Vanilla flavor is just heavenly. What I like most is the finish. It’s like a humidifier for your lips, really loading them up with slick moisture. That clear, dewy look is all you need for a hot Havana night.
Light Floral Fragrance
Chantecaille Frangipane fragrance is just the right amount of everything – sweet, sensual, exotic, clean, refreshing. It wears quite sheer; close to the skin and unobtrusive on others. A truly exemplary tropical vacation scent.
I’ve been using this day and night here in Mexico. This dewy (there’s that word again, but it’s really the best descriptor) cheek gelée from Josie Maran has a wonderfully sheer finish, creating just the right natural-looking flush against otherwise bare skin . The color I use, Getaway Red, is plucked right out of a juicy tropical punch.
Lipstick as Cheekbone Bronzer
Contouring/sculpting crayons are on a recent upswing, with Tarte, Clinique and L’Oreal all offering this new category. When you think of it though, a cream-based, smudgeable, color stain is really no different than…. a lipstick. I love this trick of mine (patting myself on the back): Le Metier De Beauté Color Stain Lipstick in Nevus is the perfect bronze with rose undertone to subtly enhance cheekbones. I glide it on just along bottom of cheekbones down to cheek hollow and then use my finger to blend.
Fast-Absorbing Body Oil
This “huile” from Sanoflore remains my top pick for body oil, which is a bit of a shame because you can’t get it here in the states. know anyone heading to France soon? If you can, sweet talk them into bringing you back a bottle. It’s aromatic, all-natural, hydrating and quick-absorbing. It gives that tan from the day a well-earned, show-off sheen.
Face Thermal Water
Avène is known for it’s thermal water, bottled in a sterile compartment at the source, the Sainte-Odile spring in France. Avène claims the mineral-infused water has soothing qualities for the skin. They recommend it, in fact, for use on sunburn. I can’t tell whether the healing claims are exaggerated but it does refresh and hydrate my skin, and I love it as a simple toner to rebalance the skin’s PH.
A lightly defined brow adds structure and polish to the face. When you aren’t wearing much other makeup looking groomed becomes even more important. I love Burberry’s Effortless Brow Definer in Ash Brown.
