Classic Red-Carpet Hair

Defining Delphine - Oscar Inspired Hair Ideas - Civello Salon

Since I came of age in a pre-pinterest world, I’ve always been programmed to look to televised red carpet events and the movies for high-flying hairstyle fantasy. With the Academy Awards airing this Sunday, I wanted to create a post highlighting some of my favorite, classic, hairstyles that make annual Oscar appearances – more regularly even than Meryl Streep.

Hollywood hair is actually quite achievable for your own red carpet moments, so I thought I’d partner with a salon to pick up a few tips on how to get the looks.

To create my Oscar-themed hair, I turned to Civello Salon, an Aveda lifestyle salon and spa with 3 locations in Chicago. Earlier this week at the North Avenue location I spent an afternoon with the creative director for Civello Salon Spas, the uber-talented Dylan Sit. Dylan transformed me from windblown Chicagoan to sleekly blown out belle and did so effortlessly. When it comes to hair, you want someone who is so confident that they are calm. Dylan exudes this maestro energy.  The warm cup of coffee that greeted my cold palms and tension-relieving neck and shoulder massage that I received reminded me to enjoy the salon process. Getting you hair done, after all, is time away from the everyday worries. It’s time allowed for yourself.

So here are the three looks we put together. Try them at home (if you’re an advanced DIY-er) or at your local salon – or Civello, if you’re a local! And of course, enjoy the Oscars this weekend. I’ll be watching and waiting for my next hair-spiration.

1. {Retro, Sideswept Waves}

I simply love this old hollywood look. It’s a staple at the Academy Awards year after year because it’s timeless, and also, I think, because it’s one of the few ways to wear hair down without looking casual. Long-length hair tends to connote youth; the finger waves and fixed side-sweep keep it poised and polished.

Here we go…

First Dylan dried my hair straight.

And then curled it with a flatiron.

All the curls need to be curled in the same direction.

Next she brushed out the Shirley Temple curls into sleek, direction-abiding waves.

Then she tucked the hair on one side behind my ear, fixing it in place with a little product.

2. {Romantic, Wispy Updo}

No explanation needed. This style just always looks soft and pretty. try it side-parted or middle-parted, with the bun off to one side, or centered just above the nape of neck. This is meant to look sort of momentarily swept up – yet each strand is placed with intention.

The textured waves from the first look were the perfect foundation for Dylan to use moving into look 2, the updo. Dylan backcombed to give me some lift at the crown and then began pinning up the curls in a slightly side-swept, artfully tousled updo.

I swooned over the finished look.

3. {Vintage Faux Bob}

this is a fun look to try because it’s a little unexpected (though popular every year at the Oscars), and long hair pretending to be a demure, disciplined bob creates a playful effect.

Dylan took out the updo pins and brushed out the curls until she had as much bounce as she wanted. Then she tucked and pinned. I couldn’t believe how easy this one was!

To keep hair pliable as we moved in and out of looks, Dylan used Aveda’s Brilliant Medium Hold Hair Spray. It’s really a shine spray first and foremost. Especially for blonde hair (which can easily look dull or matte after blow drying) a generous spritzing of this adds a beautiful, sunny luster to locks. It helps hair to retain shape, but it’s so light that you can simply comb through and start all over again with no build up. Aveda’s Air Control is the hairspray to use to lock in the finished product.

To start though, Dylan washed and conditioned my hair with Aveda’s new Smooth Infusion line, an innovative formula that purports to have a cumulative straightening and smoothing effect with regular use (can’t vouch personally – haven’t tried other than the one time). Maybe what I love most about all Aveda products are the aromatherapeutic scents of the products. A simple shampooing feels like a spa event.

Before blow drying, she prepped strands with a thickening tonic and roots with a volumizing mousse.

The secret to blow drying volume into hair? According to Dylan, that nylon and boar bristle Mason Pearson hairbrush. The more worn in and used, the better it works. I’ve been a skeptic of said $150 hairbrush but now I’m a believer. (Still, it’ll have to wait until I win the lottery).
