Dolce and Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection was my favorite of the recent fashion shows for two reasons. The first is that the show paid tribute to mothers. Pregnant models took to the runway, while other models carried their bambinos with them. One dress featured embroidered writing in a whimsical font spelling a message that I’ve written many times to my own mamma: “per la mamma più bella del mondo!” (translation: for the most beautiful mother in the world!) The ability to impart the runway with greater dimension and personality allowed the models to come across as women instead of mannequins. That, in turn, was a lovely and effective way to make the clothes, too, leap into a more realized world. Alongside the playful, pastel dresses printed with child-like scripts and drawings were the more commercial D&G black dresses with signature elements of lace and florals, complemented by gold-accented accessories.
The second reason I loved this show was Karlie Kloss’s lips. Both she and Pat McGrath, the shows makeup artist, posted a backstage instagram picture of the striking burgundy lip she wore down the runway:
I was transfixed when I saw the image on my feed. And I instantly realized that I’ve been mistaken to avoid burgundy. I always presumed that wine-tones will look too dark on a fair skinned/light haired person. Karlie proves that the combination is only more enticing. For the show, McGrath sent the models out in all 13 of the new Dolce Matte Lipstick red shades from Dolce & Gabbana’s cosmetics line. Which shade exactly Karlie wore, I haven’t been able to turn up in online searches or social media hunts. If anyone else has got the answer please share.
Despite the fact that I spend way more time in beauty departments than your average person, I have to admit I never knew D&G had a cosmetics line. I don’t think they have any presence in Chicago, so you can bet that on my next NY trip, I plan on having a hot first date with D&G Matte Lipsticks at Saks fifth Avenue.
