One of the brands I love to shop when I’m in Europe is COS (short for “Collection Of Style”). It was one of the few on my list that still required Americans to travel to them to shop. So, it’s certainly good news for COS lovers stateside that they’ve arrived in the US with an e-commerce launch now, and a Beverly Hills store hotly anticipated. (Though, whenever a label once scarce becomes widely available the shopper-hunter side of me feels slightly disappointed that the glory of the hunt no longer exists. I’ll get over it.) You don’t just have to take my word for the cool factor of this brand. Vogue says: “The brand is the best-kept secret that everyone in fashion seems to know, and editors have been carting the label’s superaffordable sweaters and white shirts back home for years. Even the most trained eye could mistake a clean COS look for Céline or Stella McCartney.”
COS is owned by Swedish company H&M. While H&M is a value-driven fast fashioner, COS is more upscale in quality, and interested in thoughtful, modern design. H&M takes on Gap and Forever21, While COS might be seen to compete more directly with Zara Woman or Club Monaco. The approachable prices will please young professionals. But pay attention to what you put in your cart because the prices do jump around a surprising amount. A printed dress is $115 while a leather sandal is $225 and a tee could be $19 or $59. The design of the product speaks to a range of customers: the more avant garde looks will excite high-fashion lovers and those who want to expand their basics will love COS’s sleek, versatile options.
