I don’t know about you, but during summer I tend to wear simple outfits designed for comfort and ease (breezy summer dresses, cut-off shorts with flowy, racerback tanks, casual knit skirts with ribbed tanks) and rely on a fun mix of accessories to dress up my look. You can instantly add a punctuation mark to an outfit with a great summer hat or signature sunglasses or interesting sandal. But most of all, with fun, non-precious jewelry. Why non-precious? Because affordable jewelry looks so good these days no one can tell how much you paid for it. And, it’s a drag to worry about valuable jewelry, especially during summer when days are prone to improvisation – a brunch date can lead to a street festival to a bike ride to a movie in the park.
I used to develop jewelry for a living and I have a hard time telling high-end and lower-end jewelry apart. I love the anecdote that Marlien Rentmeester (one of the chicest bloggers in my opinion and a former Conde Nast editor) shares on the about page for her blog Le Catch: the designer Philip Lim approached her at a cocktail party, complimented her on the necklace she was wearing and asked if it was Dries Van Noten. She replied that it was in fact Forever 21. Not that fooling people is the goal, but if someone mistakes your Bauble Bar necklace for a Tom Binns, more power to you.
Having fun with accent pieces shouldn’t break the bank, but they should add that sought-after decorative shine that just makes you feel special. Here is a round up of some of my favorite necklaces and bracelets on the market. Right now, I’m biased toward gold tones over silver – I just love how gold catches summer’s light. Every piece in this roundup is under $150.
If your summer baubles have been feeling lackluster, maybe something below will catch your eye. Happy browsing!
PS. If you follow Defining Delphine regularly, you’ll notice I love simple, strong cuffs and feature them in my looks year-round (like last week’s look with stacked cuffs). For me, a cuff or a bangle addresses jewelry in such a chic, uncomplicated way. Scroll down to the last set of images and you’ll find some of my favorite recent cuff obsessions: #13 which is a Forever 21 find ($6.80) and #9, a Lulu Frost sale piece ($125) that dazzles.
