It’s very easy to get a little too rosé-soaked on July 4th weekend – in more ways than one. For skin that got too pink, I’m here to help.
The truth is, after-sun products are great to get in the habit of using even if you got a heathy tan and didn’t burn. Any sun exposure depletes skin; returning oils and moisture to it will keep you looking younger and fresher and more prepared for the next visit to the beach – whether that’s tomorrow or in a few weeks.
Here’s what I rely on for after-sun care:
Kate Somerville’s Nourish Hydrating Firming Mist is an alcohol-free toning surge of moisture. The bottle’s release mechanism creates a gentle mist which merits mention: I’ve tried many face sprays and too often they feel like a sibling got you in the eye with a water gun. The formula here is rich in nutrients, amino acids, and vitamins B, C, and E. Lavender and orange essential oils create an awakening, fresh scent that I would bathe in if I could. Apply this to a naked face after scrubbing off the day’s layers of sunscreen, and reapply as liberally and as often as you like.
Brands and publicists often talk about “hero” products in a line. Bite Beauty’s collection of lip products, from care-oriented to color-oriented, are so rich across the board it’s almost unfair to single out a “hero”. But the Agave Lip Mask is so unlike anything else out there it warrants “superhero” status. This thick, leave-on, reparative treatment is made from pharmaceutical-grade healing lanolin, vanilla extract and jojoba oil. It’s a savior for parched, chapped lips (winter or summer). You can actually feel the prune-ing stop and the plumping start. It has the antioxidant resveratrol in it so using it as a daily therapy strengthens lips against free radicals. I really dislike minty, menthol lip balms or treatments – that medicinal feeling doesn’t relax me. This smells like creamy, sweet Madagascar vanilla bean and sends your mind to an island hammock. The Agave Mask comes in two colors: champaign (their spelling, not mine) which has a slight rose-gold shimmer tint to it or natural. Both leave you with a luxuriously soft pout.
Coola’s Radical Recovery After-Sun Lotion is a super-charged moisturizer with rehydrating Aloe, Sunflower Seed Oil, and Agave at the top of the ingredient list. Remember when you treated a sunburn with a tube of drugstore-generic, sticky, dyed-green Aloe Vera gel? Things have come a long way. This moisturizer is rich and gets to work fast at soothing sun-distressed skin.
For a little extra TLC, I like to layer on a body oil for those extra dry patches like shoulders, feet, hands and elbows. The 30ml bottle of Kahina Giving Beauty Body Serum is the perfect stowaway size for travel. A touch of this Argan and Coconut oil blend before you go to bed makes a big difference by morning. The calming notes of sandalwood allow it to double as a lovely light perfume should you have evening plans following your day in the sun.
