The Browse: Havlan & West

Defining Delphine - Havlan & West Review - Favorite Chicago Boutiques

Havlan & West is a newly opened Bucktown boutique to add to you favorites list. It sells well-curated items at affordable prices – a boutique you can ACTUALLY shop, not just browse. I’m also a fan of it because there seem to be fewer and fewer independent boutiques in Chicago each year. It’s a decline that reflects rising rents and tough competition from national brands with the ability market aggressively and discount widely. Friends, we can’t let this species go extinct! The local boutique is a place where personal client-owner relationships can still flourish, where unknown brands and novel products can be discovered, and where a one-of-a-kind exterior and interior add distinctive charm to a neighborhood’s patchwork of businesses. All of these things is true of Havlan & West.

The shop carries a mix of women’s clothing and accessories, jewelry, bath and body products, and home décor “light” I’d call it (pillows, cards, etc). The jewelry is anywhere from $14-$60 for the costume jewelry pieces; vintage watches and one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic pieces are $70-$150.  All of the clothing is under $100, with the exception of denim.

Good taste doesn’t have to cost a ton and I love that Emily McKenney, the boutique owner, embraces this philosophy and wants to create a place where people can actually sweeten their day with a little purchase that won’t break the bank. You can pop in, pick up a gift for a friend, say a gilded cuff and tobacco honey candle, and something for yourself, say a pretty top, and check out at well under $100.

Some of my favorite pieces were a pair of woven shorts in a tribal print ($65), a bohemian floral kimono ($78), colorful Guatemalan pillows ($75) and pendant necklaces ($28-$48).

The merchandise and store interior have a free-spirited, globe-trotting energy to them. Whimsical silhouettes and prints punctuate the apparel assortment which generally leans casual.
